Planetwalk Saturday, April 26, 2008

I wake up with a wakeup call at 5:30 am. In the next hour and a half I pack putting together what I think I will need for the day. It really looks like it may rain so I have my rain jacket and a new pair of rain pants, the soft case for my banjo, first aid for the feet and my bottle of water.

Planetwalk Friday, April 25, 2008

The day began with a light breakfast, leftovers of last nights salad. A big breakfast is something I avoid before setting out on a long walk. Tourist from Canada joined us at our table. When they learned I was walking for the environment, they talked about recycling and how there was no one answer.

It was not quite 8:30 am when John Graham dropped me off at the church parking lot where he had picked me up the evening before. He fiddled with the GPS and I learned how to set the data probes. He gave me a plastic bottle to collect a water sample and said goodbye.

Planetwalk Wednesday April 23, 2008

The morning clouds had disappeared by the time John Graham drove me out to the white barn across the road from a grand white farmhouse. Its porch sagged and the siding was in need of more than a fresh coat of paint. An old man with white hair, in blue overalls sitting on a bench peeked around a corner and waved in our direction.

In the morning I leave Somerset at my own time, in no particular hurry. There is no one to take me out to Route 31. It is just a few blocks up the hill past the County building.

Rain was already falling in the morning when Ron Ferguson of the Bedford Rotary came to take me back to the road. There was a sullen sound in his voice when he asked if I wanted to visit the temporary Flight 93 memorial near Shanksville.

Bedford April 26

I slept through buzzer of the alarm and jumped out of bed at the sight of the numbers glowing 6:30 on the face of the clock. The drapes had cut out all traces of the dawn.
