Redefining Environment

Chair: Esther Kupsch
ATA Local - Pembina Hills #22
Location: Shaw Conference Centre - Hall C

In 1971, John Francis witnessed an oil spill in San Francisco Bay. The effects of the spill compelled him to stop using motorized vehicles. Several months later, to stop the arguments about the power of one person's actions, he took a vow of silence. His non-motorized lifestyle lasted 22 years, and the silence 17. During that time John walked across the United States earning a BA at Southern Oregon State College, an MS in environmental studies at the University of Montana, and a PhD in land resources at the University of Wisconsin. He later sailed and walked through the Caribbean and then walked the length of South America. 'The Planetwalker' will speak on his journey, his unique perspective on the environment, and how we each can make a difference in our world. Dr. Francis is the author of Planetwalker: How to Change Your World One Step at A Time.

Speaker: John Francis
Since 1990, John Francis has shared his perspective on the environment. He wrote oil pollution regulations for the US Coast Guard, and was appointed a United Nations Environment Program Goodwill Ambassador to the World's Grassroots Communities.
