Beagle Project
Day 7 Aboard Stad Amsterdam
September 7, 2009
23:00 HR
Redmond’s alarm rings at 7:00 HR and he fumbles to turn it off. I wait to feel the motion of the ship. It is only a slight rocking that lulls me back to sleep. It is 9:30 HR when I awake again. Redmond is up, his hearing aid and glasses are gone from the drawer that we share which also separates our bunk. He is laughing standing as big as life finishing the buttons of a long sleeve blue shirt. We have missed Breakfast.
For me it is a day of celebration as I take off the seasickness patch from my neck. I tell Redmond. “Do you think that is a good idea before your interview today? “ he asks. We’ll see I reply. Now he has set me off with doubt, but as the day goes on I know it will be all right. This will be a full day, with a presentation of Planetwalker, my memoir of personal journey to all the ship.
Redmond is in the Ship’s library with the camera is on him. After that there is lunch. Then for a moment there is a different movement of the ship. Up on deck there is some excitement around Katja. She is bringing in a vertical sample that requires the ship to heave to (to stop). It is of course unusual that the ship has no forward motion, and the blue that is the sea is not racing past us, but laps languidly at our gunwales.
I’ve new strings on my banjo so I play on deck until I feel they are broken in. Then I watch the dolphins skipping across the waves before I sit down with Sarah. I wonder if they heard the music. I am tempted to play for them as they chase along the side of the ship. The camera is rolling and we are in conversation about journey and the voyage of her great-great-grandfather, and how it all relates to where we are right now. How do we know this answer?
In the evening after dinner and after the Captain tells us the progress we are making, then I am standing in front of crew and guests making the presentation of Planetwalker. In all my performances of the story of my journey arond the world, this is the first time on a sailing ship out at sea. In the end we all revisit that we cannot know what is to be discovered until we discover it. We can only go on with commitment and good heart.
