Practicing for Evening Performance in Rigging

September 6, 2009
23:00 HR

In the Long Room I sat down in conversation with Sarah Darwin. We spoke about our lives and what we hoped would come from this voyage.

For Sarah the loss of rain Forest brought tears. Having made picture frames from tropical hardwoods, favored habitat for orangutans, made her look for a personal alternative in her business, even when her clients did not care. As for me I doted on our feathered friends, taking myself back to the time a robin had fallen from it nest onto a city street. By the time I got permission from my mother to look after the creature, a passing car squashed the life out of its’ little body. Later it was an oil spill and the birds, dead and dieing that anguished to give up using motorized transportation as a personal lifestyle choice.

Did we hope to influence people to protect the environment? Was that the mission of this new voyage? If so was there enough time? Were we doing enough? What would we discover? Our talk was filled with laughter and tears, and in the end we did not know the answers to our questions.

The Ashton Brothers practiced their performance in the rigging high above the deck. In the evening they sang and swung in the lights. A sea on fire projected on the sail depicting the suffering of Fitzroy.
